Eleanor Egan, and Mary Kirby, for assaulting and robbing John Brien of 16£.— death recorded; Limerick Chronicle, 7 April 1827. Eleanor Egan and Mary Kerby, were next indicted for assaulting and robbing John Brien, at Youghal, on the 4th August. John Brien deposed, that he went into public-house to drink with the two prisoners, women of bad character, and having taken some whiskey and porter, he went out into the street, and was proceeding to a house of ill fame with them, when a boy ran from another part of the street, and having joined the prisoners, they all three attacked him; the boy caught him the neck, and with the assistance of the women, succeeded in knocking him down; they then proceeded to rob him, and took from his pocket £16 11s. 6d.—they also took off his shoes and stockings and hat, with which they all made off; witness applied instantly to a Constable, who took the women into custody the next day. The Constable was produced and corroborated this last circumstance, but did not find any of the articles in the prisoners’ possession ; he however discovered the prosecutor’s stockings near the house in which he apprehended the prisoners, concealed under a large stone—Guilty. His Lordship ordered sentence of death recorded against both prisoners, but promised to interest himself in getting the punishment changed to that of transportation for life. Cork Constitution, 5 April 1827.
