Catherine Leary was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 28th Mar 1840 and arriving 13th Jul 1840 with 214 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

Catherine Leary was a widow with 2 male children and 1 female child. Catherine came from Cork, Ireland. Of the convicts who were embarked, forty seven women left children behind in England. The indents reveal seven of the women who brought children with them on the voyage – Catherine’s children were not listed. 30/8/1842: Married Daniel Walton (Prince of Orange 1821) at Port Macquarie at St Thomas Church of England. Daniel was 46 and Catherine was 30. They had 5 children. 1845: TOL. Port Macquarie 30/1/1851: COF 20/3/1886: Catherine died aged 74.
