1838: On arrival in NSW, Thomas MARTIN, a Roman Catholic, 16, was single and a labourer. He could not read or write. His native place was Co Roscommon. He had a previous conviction, resulting in a sentence of 3 months. He was described as 5'5½", with a ruddy and freckled complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes (see New South Wales, Australia, Convict Indents, 1788-1842; Non-Annotated Printed Indentures 1838). 1843, 4 March: Granted a Ticket of Leave No.539 for the District of Melbourne (see New South Wales, Australia, Tickets of Leave, 1810-1869; Ticket of leave butts (NRS 12202); Ticket of leave butts, Dec 1842-Mar 1843).


CRIME: LARCENY - STEALING FOWLS 1837, 17 August: Thomas MARTIN was admitted to Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin, from Armagh (prisoner #698). He had been tried at Armagh on 16 June 1837, convicted and sentenced to 7 years by E. Tickell Esq. for larceny (stealing fowls, according to Convict Indents). He was described as 17 (born 1820), 5’4 ½” tall with grey eyes, brown hair and a sallow complexion. 1837, 19 August: Discharged from Kilmainham to be “embarked on board Neptune” (see Ireland, Prison Registers, 1790-1924; Dublin, Kilmainham 1815-1910).
