Passengers, Mrs. Montgomery and two children. 168 Mustered, 8 Died on voyage; Total 176 Embarked. 1831 Voyage - Source; The Hobart Town Courier. SATURDAY, MAY 14, 1831 Arrived on Monday the 9th. instant the convict ship America, Robert Donald, Esq. Commander, from London 6th. January, with, 186 females. Passengers, Mr. Capon, Chief Constable of the Island, Mr. and Mrs. Davies, Surgeon and Superintendent, Dr. Thomson, R. N.; brings also some Commissariat stores. After much examination of her record I can see the name, Griffith,s appears not as her assigned master, but from the time her name changed after her marriage to John Griffiths.
Mary Cully was convicted at Bristol City for stealing from her employer - money. 14 yr sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the ship 'America' arriving May 1831. Single woman; aged 20 yrs; housemaid. Native place - Tipperary, Ireland. Assignments of service in Colony. Appears to have been assigned to Mr. John Griffiths who later became her husband. Several notes of misconduct & time at the Female House of Correction, Launceston. Ticket of Leave 22 Dec 1842. Conditional Pardon no. 413 in 1844.
