1838: On arrival in NSW, John McGAFFIGAN/McCAFFIGAN, a Roman Catholic, was 35, single, and an indoor servant. He could not read or write. His native place was Co Down. He had no previous convictions. He was described as 5'7½", with a dark sallow complexion, brown mixed with grey hair and grey to blue eyes (see New South Wales, Australia, Convict Indents, 1788-1842; Non-Annotated Printed Indentures 1838). Note: Differences in age given and how he is described compared with his Irish prison record. 1838, 18 October: John McGASKIN per Neptune 1838, assigned to Major Crummer at Newcastle, appeared before the Newcastle Bench. Described as “Prisoner under sentence of transportation for Life. Witness before the Bench in the case of Anna Munnaford (Mountford)” (see Newcastle Bench Books, AO NSW Reel 2722, at https://jenwilletts.com/). Note: Anna or Hannah Munnaford/Mountford aka Anna Mumford per Numa 1834 was also assigned to Major Crummer at Newcastle. She had been “charged with disorderly conduct after she followed Mrs Crummer about scolding her in a disrespectful manner”. She was sentenced to 14 days in the cells.
