John McGregor was convicted at Auckland, New Zealand March 1851 for two counts of larceny - stealing clothes. 7yr sentence on each count, total of 14years. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Antares' arriving 29 May 1851. Single man; native of Glasgow, Scotland; Presbyterian; shoemaker; aged 26 yrs; 5'5 1/4"; can read & write. Period of Probation: 21 months, Prisoner Barracks, Hobart. 1852: Coal Mines 1852: Cascades (south Hobart) 1853: Davey St. Hobart 1854: Illegally try to leave Colony - 12mths hard labour. Port Arthur Penal Settlement. 1855 - 1858: Absconded.
