James Mcguire was transported on the Rolla, departing 4th Nov 1802 and arriving 12th May 1803 with 161 passengers.

On Thursday arrived the Ship Rolla, Captain John Cummings, from Ireland, with Prisoners of both sexes, viz. 119 Men and 37 Women: Seven of whom died on the passage; and the day after her arrival landed some of those who were weakly, at the General Hospital. She left Ireland the 4th of November, arrived at Rio de Janeiro on the 15th of January, sailed from thence the 6th of February, and in 95 days after came to an anchor in Port Jackson. During the latter part of the passage she experienced much bad weather; in the course of which, she sprung her main?mast and carried away her main?yard. She brings, for the use of Government, 234 pieces of Pork, 686 Casks of Flour, and 11 Tons of Sugar. Sydney Gazette, 15 May 1803.

Family connections for James (McGuire) are: McGUIRE James (McGuire) was born about 1782/5 in Monaghan Ireland. He was tried w/2others for housebreaking at Monaghan in July 1800, sentenced to death commuted to Life & arrived in NSW as a convict on 12 5 1803 after a voyage of 7months on ROLLA; he was Catholic. He was recorded in 1806 working for Richard (Rouse) at Richmond Hill. He had a relationship with Mary (Wilson her second (2of3) relationship). He was Free by Servitude by 1812. His Conditional Pardon was issued on 31 1 1814. He was recorded in 1820 with Mary (Wilsonn) & 4children at Richmond. He was recorded in 1822 as husband of Mary (Wilson) maybe at Windsor. In 1822 he was leasing 12acres at Windsor & in 1823 he was granted 50acres at Kurrajong 'Rock Valley Farm'. He was recorded in 1825 with his family as landholder at Richmond. He was issued his Certificate of Freedom no.016/4693 on 12 6 1826. He became a farmer then licensee of pub “The Five Alls” (1839–41) & later had a carrier business in Mudgee with his sons. Monaghan Assizes 22 July: "James Maguire and Thomas Mulian, indicted for a burglary and felony, and James Martin, as an accessory before the fact, ordered to be executed." Must have been commuted to transportation for life as was common for this type of crime.

James had a long term relationship with mary Wilson (Transported 'Friends' 1811. They had three children located George, Mary and Margaret. In the 1825 Muster... New South Wales General muster M-Z 1825 Wilson, Mary, free by servitude, Friends, 1811, 7 years, living with J. McGuire, Richmond Wilson, William, came free, Friend 1811, son of Mary Wilson, Richmond. Wilson, Mary, 11, born in the colony, daughter of above. Wilson, Margaret, 9, born in the colony, daughter of above. Maguire, James, conditional pardon, Rolla, 1803, life, landholder, Richmond. Whilst in the 1825 Census...page 251 McGuire, James, 43, conditional pardon, Rolla, 1802, life, Catholic [M0771] McGuire, Mary 14 born in the colony [M0772] McGuire, Margaret 12 born in the colony [M0773] Looks like Mary had found other interests she is located elsewhere....page 326 Rule, John, 32, free by servitude, Ld. James (Jem) was tried in 1800 at Monaghan, Ireland. I do not know what the crime was but the sentence was LIFE. He was transported in 1802 aboard the 'Rolla'.
