Dundalk Assizes. Child Stealing. Anne McMahon, indicted for stealing a female child, 14 months old. the daughter Michael McCarter, barber, at Dundalk, in the month of August last. M. McCarter lives in Dundalk. At the time mentioned, his eldest daughter, 11 years age, was sitting near the church of Dundalk, with the child in her arms. Prisoner came to her and gave her a penny, desiring her go and get her tobacco for it; she went, returned, and both child and prisoner were gone. After period three days, which were spent by poor McCarter and his wife in searching every where, even as even far as Dublin, the prisoner and child were taken by the police, at Enniskeen, seven miles from Dundalk. On her way to Dundalk she acknowledged to the police that she had taken the child. It did not appear nor did she state what motive had induced her to commit such an act. The child died on Wednesday last. She was found guilty; to be transported 7 years. Belfast Commercial Chronicle 15 March 1826.
