FOOTNOTE: Newspaper coverage of his trial: From the 'News of The World', October 12, 1856: "SCOTLAND Capital Conviction For Murder At the Glasgow Autumn Circuit Court, on Thursday, James McManus was indicted for the murder, on Tuesday, the 12th of August last, on the furnace bankhead of Castlehill Ironworks, in the county of Lanark, of H. McLavey or McAlevey, labourer, by striking him with an iron pinch or iron bar, one or more severe blows on the head, whereby his skull was fractured. The jury found the prisoner guilty of murder, but recommended him to mercy, on the ground that although he struck the blows he did not intend to kill. The Lord Justice Clerk sentenced him to be hanged on the 23rd instance." (http://www.perthdps.com/convicts/w4608.htm)
