Prisoner discharged from HM Gaols & Houses of Correction, Hobart Town & Launceston, weeks ending, 29 June & 3rd July 1872. Lawrence McNamara, per Alibi, F.S., tried at Oatlands, 28 Dec 1871, for being on premises for an unlawful purpose, served 6 months, native of Dublin, 82 yrs old, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark brown hair, scar on left side forehead. Tasmania Police Gazette, 5th July 1872, p112.

Free Certificate Transported again vide Misc 9/4633 The Courier Fri 3 Dec 1858. Page 3. UPPER COURT. Lawrence McNamara was charged with stealing from the dwelling house of Joseph Hone, Esq., a gold watch, four £1 notes, and other articles. In a second count the prisoner was charged with feloniously receiving. The particulars of this case have been so recently reported in tho Police Reports of the Courier that it is unnecessary to repeat them. The Jury found the prisoner guilty, and he was sentenced to four years' penal servitude. Charges. — 1st. Having absented himself from barracks without leave, after hours, and not having returned until brought back by an escort, the following morning, when he was drunk ; 2nd, having, struck with his clenched fist and offered violence to Sergeant John Torsey, in the execution of his office. Finding. — Guilty. Sentence. — Transportation for seven years. — Approved and confirmed. Remarks by His Excellency the Commander in Chief. — I cannot pass by the above sentence without the most positive prohibition of the extraordinary practice, which it seems prevails in Her Majesty's 80th Regiment, of sending out non-com- missioned Officers, without the assistance of Privates, to apprehend offenders at a distance from the barracks. — Head Quarters, Comp Lahore, 10th December 1849.
