FOOTNOTE: NEWSPAPER report of his trial -- from the Dundee Courier, 7 May, 1856, p3: "Saturday, May 5. The Court resumed this morning at nine o'clock—Lord Handyside on the bench. 25. James Menzies, Perth, charged with having stolen, on the 17th of December 1855, a barrel or cask, the property of James Mitchell, grocer, residing in Kirkgate, Perth; aggravated previous convictions of theft, pled not guilty, but several witnesses having been examined, the jury found the prisoner guilty as libelled. He was sentenced to transportation for 15 years. The prisoner had previously been sentenced to 7 years' transportation." (https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/)
