Convict Notes

John Millar was born in about 1822 St Mary’s Wynd off Canongate Edinburgh to Helen Lamont & John Millar, tailor. As a boy, John and his siblings were involved crimes of theft and on 8 Jul 1833 John was sentenced to 18 months prison with hard labour. At 17, John was working as a tailor and then on 25 Jun 1838 he was convicted of repeated thefts and transported for 7 years to the colony of NSW. The convict ship ‘Barossa’ left on 31 Jul 1839 and arrived in Sydney on 8 Dec 1839. On 25 Nov 1845 John was granted a ticket-of-leave and later worked as a mariner. On 23 May 1859 John married Ruth Cordelia Goodwin (1839-1895) at Scots Church in Sydney. They moved to the Little River goldfields at Mongarlowe near Braidwood. Their children were: John, Ruth, Mary Ann, William, Amy, Ben, Margaret, Edward, James, Agnes and Sarah. The death of John Millar sometime between 1879 and 1895 remains a mystery.
