William Mooney - 16 November 1831 - Publicly hanged on the outskirts of Goulburn for the murder of his overseer Maurice Roach near Crookwell. Body hung in gibbet until ordered buried by Governor Fitzroy in 1833. The Sydney Monitor Sat 12 Nov 1831. Page 4. Domestic Intelligence. SUPREME COURT.-CRIMINAL SIDE. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4th.-Before Mr. Justice DOWLING and the usual Military Commission. William Mooney and John White were indicted for the willful murder of Maurice Roach, at Vinedale, in the County of Argyle, on the 22th September last. ........ Mr. Justice Dowling, after commenting on the heinousness of the crime, and offering no hope of mercy to the prisoners, passed sentence of Death on them, ordering them to be executed at Goulburn Plains; their bodies afterwards to be hung in chains near to the spot where the murder had been perpetrated.
