Mary Ann Murphy was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 28th Mar 1840 and arriving 13th Jul 1840 with 214 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

1847, 4 January: Ticket of Leave granted, No 47/24, for the District of Parramatta (see New South Wales, Australia, Tickets of Leave, 1810-1869; Ticket of leave butts (NRS 12202); Ticket of leave butts, Sep 1846-Jun 1847, Oct 1847-Jan 1848).
1840, 14 July: Mary Ann MURPHY per Surry (9), 21 years old, can read; Protestant; single; native place Manchester; kitchen maid; convicted Warwick Birmingham Quarter Sessions on 6 September 1839, for picking pockets, and sentenced to 10 years' transportation. She had a former conviction, with a sentence of 6 months. She was 4'11½”, with a fair, ruddy and freckled complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes. Other: Scar on left side of forehead; another on the right eye; mole on right jaw; diagonal scar on right side of upper lip; tattoos on upper right and left arms; scars on upper left arm, and back of little finger on left hand (see New South Wales, Australia, Convict Indents, 1788-1842; Non-Annotated Printed Indentures 1840-1842).
