Convict Notes

John Mahony, Catherine Neile, Margaret Mahony, Johanna Finn, and James Fitsgerald, were then severally indicted for haying in their possession, certain moulds, for the purpose of making counterfeit coin. In this case there was every reason suspect from the testimony of several respectable witnesses, that each of the prisoners were in some way concerned in the felony ; but there did not appear sufficient evidence to convict the prisoners John Mahony, Mary Mahony, and and Johanna Finn, of having the moulds in their possession, and there not having been found any of the articles on their persons, the Jury did not consider themselves warranted to return verdict guilty; they were accordingly acquitted—the other two prisoners in whose possession the moulds were discovered, were found Guilty. —His Lordship humanely promised to interfere in their behalf, and to use his influence to get the capital punishment changed to transportation for life. Cork Constitution, 1 Aug 1826. Her husband, James Fitzgerald was transported to NSW per Mariner (3), arriving in 1827.

On Tuesday night about 11 o’Clock, Mr. Sheriff Spearing, aided by Messrs. Hewson, Bull, and Mathis, jun. surprised a noted gang of Coiners, in a remote house near the Lough. Five, namely James Fitzgerald, John Mahony, Catherine Neal, Margaret Mahony, and Johanna Finn, were found in the act making counterfeit Half Crown, Shilling and Sixpenny pieces, for which purpose they had crucibles, molds, speltre, &c. some of the pieces were uncommonly well executed. The parties after trifling resistance were secured, and committed and committed to gaol for trial at the next Assizes. Cork Constitution, 13 April 1826.
