It's possible this convict is my great great grandfather.
James Oliver was 18 on arrival in VDL, transported for stealing tartan plaid. He had prior convictions for; 14 days for worsted, shoplifting~acquitted, handkerchief~acquitted, 1 month for vagrancy, 2 0r 3 times for drunkeness. James was born in Newcastle up on Tyne. His father, James and mother Jane, 2 brothers Thomas and Henry, and 1 sister all living at his native place. James could read and write, was single, fresh complexion, light brown hair, dark brown eyes, medium mouth, nose and chin and many tattoos. Period of Probation ws 20 months and Station of Gang was New Norfolk. 9/7/1850: COF 17/5/1851: James is listed as a Steerage passenger per Shamrock, Launceston~Melbourne. Free by Servitude.
