James Porterfield died at the Ballarat Benevolent Asylum, Ballarat, Victoria on 29 June, 1894.




James Porterfield was 17 years old on arrival in VDL and was transported for ‘breaking into a cellar’. Previous convictions: once in Bridewell 60 days for Theft, stealing a Jacket, 2 or 3 times in the Watch House. Father William, mother Elizabeth. James was 5’1” tall, brown hair, grey eyes, Long scar on rt. Arm, fresh complexion. 1835 Muster: Public Works. 30/8/1839: TOL 1841: Free Certificate 21/1/1845: Married Catherine Bannon (Garland Grove). Catherine arrived with daughter Mary Ryan also a prisoner, she also had another daughter already in VDL – Mary Bannan/Bannon. At the time of their marriage, Catherine was 38 and James was 27 – they had no children. 1851, 1852 and 1854 – James made trips to Melbourne, Catherine also moved to Victoria in 1854. The lived in the Newstead area of Victoria. 1894: James Porterfield died at Ballarat Benevolent Asylum, VIC; aged 92, Catherine died of paralysis and debility at Newstead on 4/1/1870 aged 69.
