Joseph Holt, general of the Irish Rebels in 1798, arriving in the colony in January 1800 as a convict aboard the Minerva noted in his Journal that; “......On the way, I met a man named Mangin [Morgan] Power, from Dirrelossery, near Roundwood, in the county of Wicklow, son of Timothy Power. I saw him tried and heard the awful sentence of death passed upon him. I spoke to him. Captain Johnstone asked me if I knew him. I said that I did, perfectly well, and that I was present at his trial. He was tried for buying twenty-six sheep, which had been stolen. The thief fled, and poor Power was discovered with the sheep in his possession and was found guilty of the felony; but I had no doubt whatever of his innocence. The thief was a regular jobber in sheep and had bought and sold hundreds. I also said I had had dealings with Power, to a large amount, and always found him a correct, honest man. The account I gave of this poor fellow was very useful to him; he was made an overseer in the government employment a few days after; and I was well pleased at being able to serve him, having always observed that the merciful ever obtain mercy.” From “Memoirs of Joseph Holt, General of the Irish Rebels in 1798” from his original manuscript.
