Janet PROVAN (also k/a THOMSON) was convicted at Glasgow, Scotland on 25 April 1849 for house robbery. Had several previous offences. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship St. Vincent, arriving 1850. Aged 37yrs; housemaid; 5'0 1/2"; Protestant; can read. Married woman - husband Robert. Place of Birth: Stirling, Scotland. Sisters - Catherine, Isabella & Elizabeth. Brothers - James, David & John. (John, a soldier) VDL: Numerous placements for service work. Time spent at the Female Factories, Hobart and Ross. Several records of misconduct. 1 Aug 1854: Ticket of Leave granted. 9 Aug 1854: Application for Permission to Marry - to Amos PATCHEM. (subject to Clergy approval) 30 Jan 1855: Reapplication for Permission to Marry - to Amos PATCHEM. Subject to conditions. (Amos married another woman, in 1857, so it does not appear he married Janet. Amos died in 1859) 13 Feb 1855: Ticket of Leave revoked. 12 Feb 1856: Ticket of Leave restored. 19 May 1856: Certificate of Freedom issued. N.B. There are marriage registrations under the name "Janet Thomson" which may be this person? There does not appear to be any other under the name "Provan".
