Jane Rance was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 28th Mar 1840 and arriving 13th Jul 1840 with 214 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

29/2/1840 Windsor and Eton Express Berkshire, England: BERKS LENT ASSIZES Wm. Haines, aged 10 years, Henry Haines 7 years, Thomas Haines, 36 years, and Jane Rance, 35 years, were placed at the bar under three charges. The first charged the two first named prisoners with stealing, at Reading, a basket and a pair of women's shoes, the property of John Woodley, and the other prisoners with receiving them, knowing the property to be stolen. William and Henry Haines were also charged with stealing two pair of boots, the property of William Saunders, and Thomas Haines with receiving them ; and there was a further charge of similar nature against them. The eldest of the offenders, Thomas Haines, and Jane Rance were convicted, and sentenced to fourteen years transportation. The other two prisoners were Acquitted. Thomas Haines arrived NSW per 'Maitland 1840'. Jane Rance was 36 years old on arrival - Native Place: Berkshire. Jane was illiterate, protestant, a widow with 1 female child, 5'2ΒΌ" tall, sallow complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, lost a front tooth left side of upper jaw, nose thick. 1847: TOL Sydney.
