Date. 1836 Mar 28. Prisoner name: Michael Riordan. Prisoner's occupation: Carpenter. Court and date of trial: Cork Lent Assizes March 1834. Crime: Manslaughter of Timothy Horgan. Initial sentence: Transportation for life. Annotated: nil. Petitioner(s): Francis Riordan, the prisoner's father; Honora Riordan, the prisoner's mother; 32 farmers and 12 people of Donoughmore [County Cork, Ireland] with character references. Grounds for clemency: Prisoner got into a fight outside a pub after refusing to hand over a horse he was looking after; did not produce witnesses as they did not think such a severe penalty would be imposed; no previous conviction; parents' declining health; cannot look after his sisters. Other papers: A letter forwarding one of the petitions; eight good character references; a letter from C Lucas enclosing a letter from the Reverend Cotter, petition form Honora Riordan and papers from 1834.
