Convict Notes
Death Certificate lists Margaret Connell as his wife and Charles (his son) is informant. He had been living in Victoria for approx 27 years and in NSW for only 1 month where his son Charles was employed.
John Rofe is my g.g.grandfather (DOB 1806). I believe that the marriages to Byrne and Smith involved a John Rolfe (Rofe) and not my gg.grandfather as John Rolfe was born in 1816 and was a free man when he married Mary Byrne in 1844. My gg.grandfather did not receive his pardon until 1845.
John Rofe was my g g grandfather. I was Beverly Rofe before my marriage to John Oldfield. John Rofe married three times. 1.Margaret Connell in 1837 in Longford Tasmania. 2.Mary Byrne in 1844 in Launceston 3. Ann Smith in Launceston in 1852. Margaret was my g g Grandmother. She was a convict transported on the Jane in 1833. Margaret and John had 2 sons. Charles and John. This John was my g grandfather and he settled in Echuca. Victoria. He and his wife Mary had 11 children. Their 6th child John was my Grandfather. John Rofe my g g Grandfather was born in Cranbrook, Kent U.K. in 1806 and died in Launceston in 1883. His Father was John Rofe a blacksmith . His Mother was Sussanah, formarly Bridgland.
John Rofe was 22 years old on arrival in VDL. He was born in Cranbrook, Kent. Transported for stealing a gold watch from Lady Everton in an hotel at Tunsbridge. Description: Hair mole on left cheek, several brown moles on right cheek. J R A Willis inside right arm, 2 brown moles on back of right hand, grey eyes, brown hair, 5'6" tall. Had his father and mother at Cranbrook. 1830: Assigned to Mr Jas King. 1832, 33, 35 assigned to Thomas Fletcher. 12/2/1831: Absconded from Commisary Boyes since Feb. 4th, 1831. 1837: Married Margaret Connell (Jame 1833). 20/9/1836: TOL 1838: 5 gallons of wine belonging to John Rofe condemned under the permit act. 5/12/1840: On the 10th inst. on the premises of John Rofe, at Longford - under a distrain for rent - 2 large blacksmith's bellows, 2 large anvils, one vice, hammers, tongs, chisels etc. 12/10/1844: CP 9/3/1846: CP Could not find date of death. (There was also a John Rofe who arrived in Hobart a little later who was a Constable).
