Burglary and Detection of the Thieves.—On Thursday night last, the house of Mr. Mounsher of this town, was broken open and a quantity of silver spoons and other articles stolen there, from. Active measures being immediately taken, the thieves were traced to Yeovil and there secured with the goods in their possession. Their names are Charlotte James, Mary Ann Rogers, Samuel Hunt, and John Stevens. Monday evening they underwent a long examination, which ended in their being fully committed for trial. Dorset County Chronicle, 14 Nov 1839. Committed John Stevens, Samuel Hunt, Caroline James, Mary A. Rogers, Bridgwater, housebreaking, and stealing therefrom ; Taunton Courier, 13 Nov 1839.

Mary Ann married James Mills on 8 Sept 1843 at Paterson, NSW, both convicts. James asked permission to marry Mary Ann Rogers a year earlier but was denied. James died at the age of 30 on 26 March 1845, in Sydney. In 1843 Sarah Rogers was born (Birth Registered at Paterson) and Mary Jane born 1843 (birth registered at Armidale), their surnames' were Rogers and sometimes they have been recorded with the Stacey surname. It is not known if they were the daughters of James Mills. Mary Ann later had a long term relationship with John Stacey (Convict - he had a wife and children in England) John and Mary Ann had daughters, Eliza known as Eliza Rogers or Stacey (she used both names) & Tabitha Margaret Stacey (my GG Grandmother - he also had daughters in England called Tabitha and Mary Ann) and 1 son John who died as a child to Mary Ann. John had 5 living children in England, 2 sons deceased and 3 daughters. James Mills came to Australia on 5 Feb 1833 aboard the Roslyn Castle. Mary Ann came aboard the Surry. John Stacey served time at the property owned by the Boydell family called "Caergwrie" at Gresford. Mary Ann also spent time there before they both received their Tickets of Leave, It was at Caergwrie where they met. They were never married but were partners for around 40 years. Mary is buried as Mary Stacey in Sandgate Cemetery, Newcastle, NSW. It is a mystery how she came to be known as Mary Rogers, she was never married to anyone in England (some people have her married to John Stacey in England, but that isn't possible). Mary was born Holdsworth but somewhere along the way she changed it to Rogers. Her parents were Michael Holdsworth and Margaret nee Green. On Mary's shoulders was a tattoo with a heart, on the top of the heart were the initials JR and under the heart was Mary. JR it appears will remain a mystery.
