Rose Ann Smith was transported on the Margaret, departing 5th Feb 1843 and arriving 19th Jul 1843 with 158 passengers.
Built 1829 at Chepstow. 365 tons. Female prisoners were transported to New South Wales on the 'Margaret' in 1837, 1839 and 1840. The 'Margaret' was the last convict ship to transport female prisoners to New South Wales. Another voyage to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. The 1840 sailing also carried 17 free female passengers and one male. The registers of persons is not yet complete on this web site, so please note this if researching. (A work in progress.)

APPLICATION FOR PERMISSION TO MARRY: 8 Dec 1843 & again 15 April 1844- Rose Ann SMITH (per Margaret) to James JONES (per Jupiter). eref. 52/1/2 pg 090. MARRIAGE: 17 June 1844 at Hobart. Rose Ann SMITH to James JONES. ref. 37/1/4 no. 1328
Rose Ann SMITH was convicted at Edinburgh, Scotland on 21 March 1843 for receivng stolen property - an umbrealla. Also co-convicted were Ann Scott & Ann Ingles (also transported). Previous offences. 10 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Margaret'. Ship Surgeon's report: "good". Aged 25yrs; housemaid/needlewoman; 5'3 1/4" height; Presbyterian religion. Stated she was married, at the gaol, to Edward Murray, whom she had lived with for 4 yrs. Native place of birth: Edinburgh 3 Sisters: Catherine, Christina & Mary 2 Brothers: William & Robert VDL: Assigned to service work. 1 Aug 1848: Ticket of Leave granted.
