Convict Notes

From: 'Planting the Celtic Cross' by Rev. Brian Maher, page 113. Micheal, John and James Ryan arrived in New South Wales on the ship 'Southworth' on 9 March 1822 from Cork. They were transported for 7 years in March 1821 and both Michael and John gained tickets of leave on 27 April 1826; all three had certificates of freedom by March 1828, after which they were employed as overseers and servants in Sydney. Michael married Sarah Bennett in 1834 in Sydney, while James is recorded as the intended purchaser of 2,800 acres in County Argyle in 1836. Michael, Too, made sundry purchases of more than 2,000 acres and gained leases of range country bordering 'Springfield'. James died relatively young and as a consequence Michael Ryan decided to build a small church in his memory for the community. It came to be called St Michael's Church after the donor rather than the deceased." The body of James is interred there. The building is now derelict.
