Convict Notes

Census of New South Wales; November 1828: [Ref S0673] - Shepherd, Henry 32, TL, Asia 1821, 14 years. Servant for Mr Howe at Airds. (Note# The Asia and Elizabeth arrived within two days of each other in December 1820 and offloaded the convicts in the first few days of 1821 - Some mix up here as to which ship Henry was assigned.) The Mr Howe would be the Emnancipist landholder William Howe, Atlas 1816, who held a huge acreage at Airds; 3500 acres, 1000 cleared, 500 cultivated. 20 horses, 650, horned cattle and 600 sheep - clearly he had need of servants.

Arrived Sydney December 1820. Sent to Airds where he worked at 'Glenlee' owned by G.L. Lowe (Magistrate). He married Jane McNabb a free Irish woman (arrived in 1832 on the Red Rover) on 1/08/1833 at St James Church Sydney. They settled at 'Spring Creek' and the first of their 8 children was born later that year. Later they both work at 'The Hermitage' (still standing) at The Oaks. Their last 2 children were born there but Jane died shortly after the birth of the last born, John, on 28/02/1946. Henry remarried in 1851 and purchased land at Wollondilly in 1852. He died at 'Molesmain' on 05/04/1855 and is buried along with Jane and 3 infant children in the graveyard of St. Paul's Cobbitty. Henry was described as being 5'6", with fair ruddy complexion, brown hair, light grey eyes. He could read and write well so it is assumed that he had a good eduction. He was born in Kinoulton, Nottinghamshire.
