Thomas is the son of Thomas and Helen Short (nee Dempster). He was born in Montrose Scotland where his father was garrisoned. He received a Ticket of Leave in May 1839 requiring that he remain in the district of Berrima. He received his Conditional Pardon on 30 July 1847. A few years later he went to Victoria possibly in search of gold. On the 16 June 1851 he married Ellen Fennelly and they had 5 children. Thomas died in Heathcote Victoria in 1880.
