His original journey from England was on Mangles, and he arrived on Norfolk Island. He was later moved from Norfolk Island to VDL on the Duke of Richmond. Newspaper reports that the Duke of Richmond carried 200 prisoners on this journey from Norfolk Island to VDL. His Tasmanian conduct record refers to his arrival on Mangles, written along the side. Tasmanian Conduct Record:https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON33-1-52$init=CON33-1-52p163 He was a native of Nottingham, aged 23 on his arrival. He could read and write. He received a Conditional Pardon 5 October 1847. Shipping Intelligence. MARCH 12.—Arrived the barque Duke of Richmond, Clarke, master, from Norfolk Island 23rd ult., with 200 male prisoners. Passengers—Lt.-Col. Hulme, of the 96th Regt., Mrs. Hulme, two Misses and Master Hulme, Lieut. Wilson, Lieut. Curran, Assistant-Surgeon Steward, 68 rank and file, 11 women, and 23 children.
