Albert SMART was convicted at Exeter, Devon on 17 March 1849 for arson - setting fire to 2 stacks of hay. (Tried with Premberton, also convicted and on board ship.) 10 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Fairlie' arriving 4 July 1852. Single man; aged 26yrs; brassfounder; ruddy complexion; red hair; blue eyes; 5'3 1/2"; Church of England; can read & write a little. Native place - Liverpool Father - Henry Brother - William Sister - Jane Assigned out to work services in VDL. Pass Holder upon arrival. 11 Oct 1853: Ticket of Leave granted 28 March 1859: Certificate of Freedom, at Hobart. Child: Walter SMART b. 21 Jan 1856 Hobart (ref. 33/1/6 no. 920)
