Convict Applications to Marry. John Smith, per Elizabeth (3), age 26, 14 years, Bond; and Ann Kent, Grenada (4), age 24, 7 years, Bond. Date of Permission, 18 Sep 1827, Parramatta, Revd. Samuel Marsden.
JOHN SMITH was convicted at the Southampton Assises of stealing silver from his employer, while working as a servant and was sentenced to 14 years transportation. He sailed on the ‘Elizabeth 1(3)’, a convict transport of 482 tons built in 1809. William Ostler was the Master and Andrew Montgomery the Surgeon Superintendent. The ship left Downs on 18th August 1820 and after a voyage of 135 days ( via Rio de Janeiro) arrived at Sydney cove on 31st December 1820. The convicts were assigned to Parramatta, Liverpool, Windsor and Airds on 11th January 1821. 1822 General Convict Muster - Assigned to William Patrick Gang, Parramatta. (A196270) 1823 Jan 25 - Assigned to Mr Joseph Kenyon of Parramatta (Col Sec Index to Papers, Fiche 3291 p113) 1823 Oct 31 - Assigned to Martha Blower of Prospect. (Col Sec Index to Papers, Fiche 3291 p115) 1825 Muster - Assigned to Martha Blower of Prospect. Joseph Kenyon had a Nursery in Argyle St Parramatta and was granted additional land at Prospect in 1826. William and Martha Blower’s land was the adjoining property to Joseph Kenyon’s, which was named ‘Woodlands’ On the 28th February1827 John Smith was granted a Ticket of leave and allowed to remain in the District of Prospect on the recommendation of Parramatta Bench. In 1827 an Application to Marry was lodged with the Rev Samuel Marsden and their names also appeared in the Convict Banns. SMITH John 26 Elizabeth 1820 Ticket of Leave KENT Ann 24 Grenada 1825 Bond. They married on 18th September 1827. At the time John Smith was working for Chas. Whalan also at Prospect, adjoining the Blower and Kenyon properties. John and Ann had 6 children born at ‘Woodlands’: Certificate of Freedom No 34/717 3rd June 1834
