Old Bailey: 21/8/1848: JOHN SMITH , stealing 1 watch, value 8l.; the goods of Emily Farrer, in the dwelling-house of Joseph Sherwood. John Smith's proper name was James Whiting. The Old Bailey trial stated that John was 28 but on his conduct record he was 36, he could read and write, was 5'4 3/4" tall, fair complexion, Brown hair and eyes, native place: Bury St Edmunds, scar under right eye, face slightly pockpitted, small mole back of right wrist, married. 24/8/1852: TOL 31/8/1852: Recommended for CP 21/6/1853: CP
