Many people state that James Squires was married to Martha Quinton but the only Squires/Quinton marriage record I can find took place in 1799. I am leaning more towards him marrying a Martha Sutton in 1777 but that may not be correct either. If anyone out there has records I'd love to see them.

James Squire's daughter Mary Ann had married Thomas Charles Farnell of Kissing Point in 1824 and the following year on 25th June she gave birth to a son, James Squire Farnell. In 1828, the brewery was briefly re-opened by Mary Ann's husband Thomas Farnell, until his ill health forced the brewery to close in 1834. In 1877 James' grandson, James Squire Farnell, became the first Australian Premier of New South Wales. In 1999, Lion Nathan renamed the previously-purchased Hahn Brewery as the "Malt Shovel Brewery", releasing a line of James Squires beers in honour of Australia's first commercial brewer.

James was tried and convicted in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey on 11th April 1785 for the theft of 5 hens and 4 cocks plus other items from a yard owned by John Stacey, sentenced to 7 years transportation. Left England on 13th May 1787. Ship:- the 'Charlotte' sailed with 88 male and 20 female convicts on board, there were no recorded deaths for the voyage. Arrived on 26th January 1788. James was no stranger went it came to crime, 11 years earlier he had been arrested for highway robbery and had been sentenced to 7 years transportation to America or enrolment in the Army, he elected to serve his sentence in the Army and returned to his home Town as a free man within 4 years. He managed a local Hotel in Heathern Street Kingston, which was a popular haunt for highway robbers and smugglers. When the First Fleet set sail on 13th May 1787, James had to leave his wife Martha and his 3 young children, John aged 9, Sarah aged 7 and James aged 4, behind in England, never to see them again, although in his will, published on 15th August 1822 he left his wife Martha the sum of 50 pounds and each to of his three children the sum of 30 Pounds. James had a liason with Mary Spencer, a convict, which resulted in the birth of a child, Francis born 1st August 1790 on Norfolk Island. In 1791 he formed a relationship with his live -in convict servant Elizabeth Mason, the couple having 7 children during thier time together, after Elizabeth's death in 1809 he then maintained an affair over a number of years with his live-in housekeeper Lucy Harding, eventually moving into her private residence on Castlereagh Street Sydney in 1816, leaving her the sum of 900 Pounds plus items of furniture to the value of 100 Pounds in his will. When his sentence had expired he was granted 30 acres of land at Eastern Farm (Kissing Point) on 22nd July 1795, noticing that other ex-convicts had not claimed thier land grants that were nearby, he took them to the Colonial Secretary's office to claim thier land grants and then proceeded to purchase each property for the sum of 1 shilling. He was an extremely enterprising man and by mid 1800 he had 10 sheep, 18 pigs and 35 goats, 5 acres were sown in wheat and another 45 acres ready for planting maize and barley. Two years later he owned 291 acres, with 120 acres cleared and 28 acres in grain and his household was comprised of himself, Elizabeth Mason, 6 children, 4 free men and 2 government servants and was self supporting. James had also been brewing beer since his arrival in the colony and 1802 saw the revelation that the Army was trafficking rum. this created an uproar in the fledgling colony and Governor King was concerned about the corruption spread by rum, so he began to officially endorse the brewing of beer. English hops and brewing equipment were regulary transported on the convict ships at the Governments expense. James' hop growing knowledge broadened and as the 19th century gained momentum, his enterprises did likewise. After the Rum Rebellion in 1808 James began work as a baker, he had a bakery in Kent Street and also supplied the colony with meat and his farming produce. James opened ' The Malting Shovel' Tavern on the shores of the Parramatta River in the Eastern Farm district of Kissing Point, which was about halfway between Sydney town and Parramatta and a licence was issued on 19th September 1798 for the sale of 'spirituous liquors' at a cost of 5 pounds, renewable every year. James died on 16th May 1822 and the following article appeared in the Sydney Gazette on 24th May 1822:- Deaths:- On Thursday evening last, at Kissing Point, after an illness of about 3 months, Mr James Squire, in his 68th year. As one of the primary inhabitants of the Colony, having come hither in the first fleet in 1788, none ever more exerted himself for the benifit of the inhabitants than the deceased. He was the first that brought Hops to any perfection and hence was enabled to brew beer of an excellent quality. "Squires Beer" was well known. He might for long residence, be styled the "Patriarch of Kissing Point", as he had lived , where he died, 26 years. The "OLD HANDS", by the frequent visitation of death, are becomming thinned in their ranks, this should lead to reflection, for the day will soon arrive when even those, now living, shall cease to say "I came in the first fleet". James Squires death was marked by the biggest funeral ever held in the Colony. He was buried at Devonshire Street Cemetery, where Central Station now stands, since then his remains and headstone were removed to Botany Cemetery, the head stone, now too worn to identify, was said to have the following epitaph:- "In sacred respect to the Loving Remains of Mr James Squire, late of Kissing Point who departed this life May 16th 1822 at the age of 67 years. He arrived in the Colony in the First Fleet and by Integrity and Industry acquired and maintained an unsullied reputation. Under his care the Hop Plant was first cultivated in this Settlement and the first Brewery erected which Progressively matured to Perfection. As a Father, Friend and Christian he Lived Respested and Died Lamented".

Using imported hops which he acquired from the 'Daedalus' he quickly established himself as a brewer in the colony. He later brewed for Lieutenant Governor Grose and Paterson from Englsh malt. In 1792 he moved his brewing operations to Kissing Point where he was granted 30 acres in 1795, and where he built a brewery and tavern, which became a opoular halfway house for travellers between Sydney and Parramatta. By 1802 he held 291 acres and was constantly experimenting to perfect his brewing techniques. By 1806 he had acquired 986 acres, and wile he was mainly producing wheat and maize, and grazing sheep, he had two and a half acres under hops. By 1812 he had 5 acres under hops which produced 1500 pounds of hops, used both for brewing and for yeast for breadmaking. Squires was also one of the alrgest suppliers of meat to the colony, a district constable, and acted as banker and philanthopist to many of his poorer neighbours. Convict artist Joseph Lycett wrote of him 'Had he been less liberal he might have died more wealthy; but his assistance always accompanied advice to the poor and unfortunate'. Squires was also a friend to the aborigines and Bennelong was buried on his farm.

James was married in England, to Martha Quinton (3 children). Then, in the colony, he maintained several liaisons with a number of women, either in his employ are close associates. These included: Mary Spencer (First Fleet Convict, Prince of Wales, 1788) (1 child); Elizabeth Mason (Convict, Mary Ann, 1791) (7 or 8 children).

James was tried at Surrey Lent Assizes held at Kingston upon Thames 11 Apr 1785. He was charged with highway robbery and sentenced to seven years transportation. He was transported on the ship 'Charlotte'.
