Research by several branches of descendants now believe the surnames occasionally used by Mary Sullivan uxor Livingstone : "Lucas" and occasionally "Leary" and "O'Leary" - were all employed to confuse authorities and to distance Mary, Charles and their 6 daughters from their earlier involvement with the VDL penal system. Mary's choice of "Leary" most probably stems from her mother's maiden name, and not from a previous marriage of Mary before she was transported. With husband Charles' repeated criminal activity once the family moved to Victoria ~1859, and his subsequent frequent imprisonments in that state, Mary was largely left to support and raise her children all by herself. Daughter Susan died in 1864 of accidental scalding at just 2 years of age; daughter Jane Agnes aka "Jennet" died of TB aged 22 in 1884. Charles & Mary's 4 surviving daughters between them produced 44 grandchildren.

Mary Sullivan/nee Leary/Livingston/Lucas was transported for 'Stealing a shirt'. Mary "Leary" must have married a "Sullivan" before she arrived, then married Charles "Livingston/e" who then changed his name to "Lucas" when they moved to Victoria.
