John Symes was one of seven male convicts sent from India to Australia in 1819, by the Brig “Greyhound”, under the command of Captain Ritchie. The Greyhound returned to Hobart from Calcutta on the 16th March 1819. Of the convicts, two were runaways from Sydney, (John Daniels and John Watson) and the other 5 were convicted in India, or Ceylon, (Michael Quigley, Edward Shadwick, Eli Wotton, James Hartley and John Symes). John Symes was convicted at Bombay.
