WHAT BECAME OF GEORGE ARCHER? After 12 years in five different prisons -- in England and abroad in Bermuda -- George Archer was granted a Licence for Parole #9255, also known as a Ticket of Leave, for early release from Portsmouth prison, Cumberland Street, Portsmouth, Hampshire (UK, Prison Commission Records, 1770-1951 for Geo Archer; Portsmouth Prison; Register of Prisoners; labelled 1880-1881). The record below suggests that he did not re-offend and, thus, lose his Ticket: "Reference: PCOM 3/88/9255 Description: Licence number 9255: George Archer. Caption order and prison record from when he was convicted of housebreaking with intent to steal and wilful fire raising at the Circuit Court of Judiciary at Perth, Scotland 03 May 1849. Then aged 26 years and by trade a sailor. Sentence: Life years penal servitude. Licence granted 03 May 1861, for early release from Portsmouth prison. Date: 1861 May 3 Held by: The National Archives, Kew (https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10518001).

FOOTNOTE: Newspaper report of the trial: David Tasker, George Archer, and James Patterson (the latter of whom was outlawed for not appearing), pled not guilty to a charge of housebreaking, theft, and wilful fire-raising—aggravated the usual way—they having, 10th December, broken into the warping-room of the manufactory at Pole Park, Dundee, belonging to Mr. John Mitchell, flax spinner there, and taken from a lockfast desk 7s. in bank notes and silver; likewise with having broken into the said warping-room on the 10th January thereafter with intent to steal, and then wilfully setting fire to a quantity of yarn, which would have soon destroyed the whole building, with all the goods and machinery therein, had not the fire been providentially discovered in time for the prevention of such serious consequences. As it was, the damages were estimated at £475. The case going to trial, and after patient hearing of a rather heavy but very corroborative mass of evidence, the jury, retiring for about twenty minutes, unanimously found the prisoners guilty of the second charge, and the other not proven. They were sentenced to transportation for life." (Perthshire Advertiser, Thursday 10 May 1849, p3 at https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/). --00--
