James Tedder was transported on the Indefatigable And Minstrel, departing 9th May 1812 and arriving 19th Oct 1812 with 331 passengers.
The Indefatigable was built at Whitby, England. She was square-rigged three masted ship of 549 tons and had three decks; a length of 127 ft. and a beam of 31ft. 8ins. The Indefatigable sailed from England on 4th June 1812 in company with the Minstrel. The Indefatigable came direct to Hobart, VDL arriving there on 19 October 1812. One prisoner died on the voyage out. Having disembarked the prisoners in Hobart, the Indefatigable arrived in Port Jackson on 6 December 1812, departing there bound for England in January 1813. The Indefatigable returned to Australia with convicts in 1815 (see separate listing).

Family connections for James (Tedder) are: TEDDLER James (Teddler) was born about 1790/1800 & became apprenticed as a tinman at Islington London. He was sexually assaulted then tried for extortion at Middlesex Sessions of Peace in 1810, sentenced to 7years & arrived at Hobart Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) as a convict on 19 10 1812 after a voyage of 5.5months on INDEFATIGIBLE travelling with MINSTREL; he was 5'3" light brown hair grey eyes. He became a miller. He married Catherine (Bartlett/Cullen her first marriage) on 19 8 1816 at St Davids CofE Hobart. He was issued his Freedom Certificate on 3 11 1817. He died on 28 9 1822 age22/32. [Some details taken from this Website] Catherine (Bartlett/Cullen) was born in 1797/1800 [dates conflict in Smees records & NI Refs.] on Norfolk Island. She is recorded as child off stores on Norfolk Island in February 1805. On 26 12 1807 she was taken to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) as part of the first evacuation on HMS PORPOISE by her parents, arriving on 17 1 1808; to New Norfolk Derwent Valley. She married secondly James (Blay) on 13 2 1823. She helped sell the Georgian mansion at New Norfolk in 1836 to recover debts. She died on 11 7 1866 age about66/69 mother of 3children. James died on 28th September 1822 (Hobart Town Gazette 28/9/1822). He was apprenticed to a tinsmith in Islington when charged, with one year to complete. He became a miller in VDL.




Convicted of extortion. Was the victim of sexual assault. Transported to Tasmania. Married Catherine Cullen (daughter of James Bryan Cullen- First Fleet - and Elizabeth Bartlett - Marquis Cornwallis).
