David Thomas was 25 years old and a "Collier" and was involved in the Miners Riots in Merthyr. He was sentenced to death for attacks on the house of Thomas Williams and/or Thomas Lewis. He was known as Dai Llaw-Haeam" and was quite prominent in the riots. 1837: Assigned to the Mineral Surveyors Dept., Syd. 22/7/1842: TOL Newcastle. 9/11/1843: TOL Passport, Newcastle Bench. 31/12/1847: CP 1852: TOL, Broulee - Tried Maitland Circuit Court. There were 7 David Thomas's that were transported to NSW about the same time, so I include this as it is the only reference to a court trial for David Thomas:- 13/9/1848: Sentenced to 7 years hard labour on the roads or Public Works for committing an assault on a child under 10 years of age.
