ROBBERY. Matthew Todd, for stealing 50£, the property of Mr. Whittle, at the fair Kilsallan, was found guilty and sentenced to transportation for seven years. Saunders News-Letter, 24 Sep 1829. COLLEGE-STREET POLICE-OFFICE— Matthew Todd was brought on charge of having in his possession a Bank Ireland post bill, which was supposed have been stolen. Peace-officer Montgomery stated that the prisoner was a most notorious coiner and that bad been detained in consequence of having a note for large a sum in his possession, without being able give satisfactory account of the manner in which he obtained it. Todd, being questioned by the Magistrate, said he was dealer in horses and linen, and that he got the note Tuesday, at the fair of Kilsallaghan where he sold horse for £37, and gave the purchaser £l3, the difference between the price and the amount of the note. Magistrate was not satisfied with this explanation, and ordered the prisoner to be remanded. Mr. Patrick Caffray, James’s-street, stated that Saturday morning last a friend of his, of the name of Stephen Whittle, who resided in the country, near Killeock, had come to him, and informed him that his father had been the fair of Kilsallan on the Friday before, where, towards evening, his pocket was picked of post bill for £50, also of six Bank notes £s each. The bill was drawn in favour of Stephen Whittle, and was not endorsed. this (Mr. Caffray) immediately accompanied his friend to the Bank, where he had payment stopped, and he was this day notified of the result. Mr. Caffray’s informations were then taken. Drogheda Journal 12 Sep 1829.
