Edward Tracy was transported on the Calcutta, departing 19th Apr 1837 and arriving 5th Aug 1837 with 330 passengers.
HMS Calcutta was the East Indiaman Warley (1795), converted to a Royal Navy ship. This ship of the line served for a time as an armed transport. She also transported convicts to Australia. The French Magnanime captured Calcutta in 1805. In 1809, after she ran aground during the Battle of the Basque Roads and her crew had abandoned her, a British boarding party burned her. In 1803 the Calcutta sailed into Port Phillip bay where at least 4 convicts escaped , in Sydney in April 1804 it was reported that 8 had died on the trip. Of the four known escapees one was shot on escape, 2 turned back after 2 days to reattach to the group at the camp in bay before the boat left , one continued on ...into Australia's history books. At least 13 convicts were transferred on to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia.The ship also carried officers, wives and free settlers.

QUEEN’S COUNTY ASSIZES. Thursday. March 16. Edward Tracy was indicted for breaking and entering the house of William Gleeson, and taking therefrom ?s.6d. Guilty—to be transported for life. Saunders News-Letter, 22 March 1837.




THURSDAY Edward Tracy was indicted for breaking and entering the house of William Gleeson, and taking therefrom 15s 6d. William Gleeson examined by Mr. Clarke—Recollects 20th June ; was at home, two persons  came into his house, (there were others outside.) one had a pistol ; ‘ the other beat him with a spade handle; the man with the pistol demanded the money ; and the man with the spade handle took it out of his breeches pocket ; he could not identify the prisoner. Kvyran Gleeson, son of the former witness ; identifies the prisoner ; saw him several  times before ; he searched witness's pocket ; had then an opportunity of seeing his face ; had no light but the fire, To a juror—The man with the pistol asked for the money ; and the man with the spade-handle took it. DEFENCE. David Ryan examined by Mr. Murphy: lives in the county of Tipperary ; sat up in prisoners house all night ; his leg was broken an| the welding was not dry, and he would not sleep with any one, Edward Tracy supported the alibi, which failed. - Guilty—to be transported for life, The jury recommended young Gleeson, who gave his testimony in a satisfactory manner to his lordship’s consideration, and his lordship recommended the grand jury assess a sum not exceeding £10, as a reward for his conduct, and encouragement to others to do likewise.
