John Wade was transported on the Calcutta, departing 31st Jan 1803 and arriving 4th Oct 1803 with 305 passengers.

HMS Calcutta was the East Indiaman Warley (1795), converted to a Royal Navy ship. This ship of the line served for a time as an armed transport. She also transported convicts to Australia. The French Magnanime captured Calcutta in 1805. In 1809, after she ran aground during the Battle of the Basque Roads and her crew had abandoned her, a British boarding party burned her. In 1803 the Calcutta sailed into Port Phillip bay where at least 4 convicts escaped , in Sydney in April 1804 it was reported that 8 had died on the trip. Of the four known escapees one was shot on escape, 2 turned back after 2 days to reattach to the group at the camp in bay before the boat left , one continued on ...into Australia's history books. At least 13 convicts were transferred on to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia.The ship also carried officers, wives and free settlers.

Family connections for John (Wade) are: WADE John (Wade) was born on 4 3 1775 & became a shoemaker. He was tried for stealing at Surrey Quarter Sessions on 14 1 1800, sentenced to 7years & arrived at Port Phillip (now Victoria) as a convict on 4 10 1803 after a voyage of 7+months on HMS CALCUTTA (an expedition that moved to Van Diemens Land); he would have camped at what is now Sorrento/Sullivans Bay. This expedition rejected Port Phillip for a settlement at this time & he was moved to Risdon Derwent Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) on 27 1 1804 (arriving on 15 2 1804) on OCEAN or HMS LADY NELSON or leaving on 24 3 1804 (arriving on 25 6 1804) on OCEAN. He was appointed government shoemaker & tanner. He was Free by Servitude in 1807. He married Catherine (Morgan age16) on 21 2 1808 at St Davids CofE Hobart. In 1810 he was appointed first Sheriff at VDL county Buckinghamshire. He was Free by Servitude by 1811. A John (Wade) is recorded as Chief Constable in 1817 for Derwent. He is recorded as on stores on 2 10 1818 at Hobart Town. He may have moved to or visited UK as suggested in Smees records. [Some details taken from this Website] 1.Catherine (Morgan) was born on 15 2 1792 on Norfolk Island. She is recorded as child off stores on Norfolk Island in February 1805. She was probably taken to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) by her parents on 6 10 1806 on SURPRISE; settled on grant at Kangaroo Point. She is recorded as off stores in Hobart Town on 2 10 1818. She died on 5 7 1876 age83. Details of Catherine (Morgan)s family are given in entry for Richard (Morgan ALEXANDER 1788) on this Website. John (Wade) & Catherine (Morgan) produced at least 7children: 1.Catherine (Wade) was born in 1809 & baptised on 12 1 1809 at St Davids CofE Hobart. She died on 16 3 1880 age about70. 2.Ann (Wade) was born in 1811. 3.Mary (Wade) was born in 1812 & baptised on 5 7 1812 at St Davids CofE Hobart. She died on 29 5 1861 age about48. 4.John (Wade) was born on 26 7 1814 & baptised on 29 8 1814 at St Davids CofE Hobart. 5.Henry (Wade) was born on 23 3 1816 & baptised on 6 9 1817 age17m w/George at St Davids CofE Hobart. 6.George (Wade) was born on 1 9 1817 & baptised on 6 9 1817 w/Henry at St Davids CofE Hobart. 7.Sarah (Wade) was born in 1820. Tasmanian Marriages. https://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD36-1-1p6j2k John Wade, single man, and Ctherine Morgan, single woman, both of this settlement, were married by banns, at Hobart Town, 21 Feb 1808, by Robert Knopwood, Chaplain. John and Catherine both signed their names. Witnesses were Thos. Newby, (signed), and Francis Barnes, (signed).

Lt Gov Collins appointed Wade as Gov. Shoemaker and Tanner while serving sentence. In 1807 Wade became a free man. He married Catherine Morgan on 21 Dec 1808 by Rev. Bobby Knopwood. In 1810 Gov Collins appointed Wade as first Sheriff of VDL, County Buckinghamshire.
