ADM 101/24/31827-1828 Medical and surgical journal of the Elizabeth convict Ship, for 6 July 1827 to 26 January 1828 by Joseph H Hughes, Surgeon, during which time the said Elizabeth was employed in transporting female convicts from Ireland to Sydney, New South Wales. Folio 2: 17 September 1827, Norah Welsh, aged 25, Convict, delivered of a female child after 26 hours in labour. Discharged, 16 October 1827. Folios 11-12, and 15: Elizabeth Welsh, aged 3 months, the child of Norah Welsh; disease or hurt, griping pains in the bowels, sometimes relaxed, sometimes costive, convulsions and an eruption of copper coloured, broad spots. Put on sick list, 13 November 1827. Died, 15 December 1827 [folio 15]. Folio 15: Elizabeth Welsh, aged 3 months, child of Norah Welsh, treatment 10 December 1827 until death, 15 December 1827. The Surgeon suspects that the mother had venereal disease when her child was conceived. She continued to decline but then improved slightly until the 13 December 1827, when cold weather brought on catarrh and convulsions.
