Footnote: His co-accused Charles Hewitt was transported to VDL per the St Vincent, arriving in 1853. See his bio at https://convictrecords.com.au/convicts/hewett/charles/4532. --00--

IN WA: 1851: On arrival in WA, William Ward was listed as convict #606, 18 years old, single, a labourer; he had sandy hair, dark brown eyes and a sallow complexion. He was "much marked with small pox" and had a cut on the right knee (Western Australia, Australia, Convict Records, 1846-1930 for William Ward; Convict Department; Registers (128/40 - 43)). --00--

TRIAL: 5 July, 1847: William Ward was convicted at the Old Bailey, as per the trial transcript below: “1641. WILLIAM WARD was indicted for stealing 1 mare, price 12l.; the property of Thomas Fairclough; and CHARLES HEWITT for feloniously receiving the same, well knowing it to have been stolen; against the Statute, &c.; to which WARD pleaded GUILTY. Aged 13. HEWITT pleaded GUILTY. Aged 17. Transported for Seven Years.” (https://www.oldbaileyonline.org/) --00--

NOTE: Several records incorrectly give William Ward's place of trial and conviction as Nottingham, on 2 July, 1849. This may stem from the Fremantle jail records where two men called William Ward, who arrived separately in WA in 1851, the first on the Mermaid in May and the second on the Pyrenees in June, have been given the same trial location and date. "Our" William Ward's WA convict number is 606; the other man's is 207. --00--
