EDWARD DUNNING - Antecedents unknown See below - one of his aliases is Edward Dunhill. He is the right age to perhaps be the Edward Dunnill christened 24 Feb 1794 at Newton Upon Ouse, Yorkshire, the son of a Thomas Dunnill although his convict record in Tasmania states his native place as Kepwick Yorkshire (Parish of Leake). Described as husbandman on marriage and as miller of Hunton on birth of son. -----Original Message----- From: A.B. I should like to find out if it is likely that any other information is held regarding for example his abode or antecedents, and how this might be imparted to me since I live at some distance from York. The index that you've seen refers to the York Castle Calendar of Felons that we hold in the Reference Library at York. This is a collection of lists of people who appeared at the Assizes in York, giving their crime and punishment. I have copied out the entries as they refer to Edward Dunning, and they are as follows: THE CROWN CALENDAR FOR THE YORKSHIRE LENT ASSIZES HOLDEN AT THE CASTLE OF YORK SATURDAY 20TH MARCH 1824...... Edward Dunning, alias Waters, age 31, date of commitment 18th March 1824, charged upon the oaths of William Rymer, now of Richmond, & late of Hunton, in the North-Riding, & others, with having, about a fortnight or three weeks before the 14th of February last past, burglariously & feloniously entered the house of - Hansel, (Baker, Grocer and Draper of Millgate and Marketplace) at Thirsk, in the said Riding, and feloniously stolen, and carried away a quantity of quilts, rabbit skins, & other goods, the property of the said Hansel, of Thirsk aforesaid. (This robbery committed with one John Auton also of Hunton aged 27) GENERAL GOAL DELIVERY SATURDAY 20TH MARCH 1824 listed under prisoners with ' Judgement of death entered on Record against them & every of them' is "Edward Watters, otherwise called Edward Dunning, otherwise called Edward Dunhill. Found guilty." Note to the left of the entry states that 'all capital convicts reprieved'. Answer: Mr Birdsall Thank you for your enquiry. The only record I found relating to an 'Edward Walters' was the convict arrival which contained the same information you provided. I checked several databases: The Tasmanian Pioneer Index 1803-1899 which indexes births deaths and marriages. There were no entries for 'Edward Walters' but there was only other record close for a 'Edward Ernest Walters' who died 1 July 1878, registration # 99/1878 Reference RGD35. NB A possible death of our man is at Campbelltown Tasmania 1869 - Edward Waters born 1790 There were no records of births with Edward Walters as the father. There were no records of marriage of Edward Walters either. I checked the Index to Convict Applications for Permision to Marry 1829-1857 and again no entry for your man. His native place is Kepwick/Yorkshire.
