National Archive. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/6/67 1823 Apr Prisoner name: Thomas Weir. Prisoner details: Of Hamilton, South Lanarkshire. Court and date of trial: Circuit Court of Justiciary, Glasgow, April 1823. Crime: Assault and prison-breaking. Initial sentence: 14 years transportation. Annotated: '7 May 1823 Refused'. Petitioner(s): Margaret Weir (or Margaret Curning), the convict's wife, undersigned by four inhabitants of Hamilton. Grounds for clemency: Convict's wife and two infant children are in indigent circumstance and rely on the charity of others; convict's mother-in-law is old and infirm; the convict surrendered himself after the prison break; the crime does not merit the sentence. Other papers: Letter from J A Scholar [MP] transmitting the petition to the Home Department. Additional Information: The wife prays that if her petition is unsuccessful she and her two children may be transported with her husband.

Noted against name; 34/1056.
