Convict Notes
Dorset County Chronicle Dorset, England 9 Aug 1855 James Western, sen., and James Western, jun, (father and son), pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing three bushels of wheat, the property of Mr. William Bruford, of Tolland; and were then arraigned for cutting and wounding William Connibeer, with intent to kill him. Connibeer was in the employ of Mr. Bruford, and was engaged to watch his barn, from which wheat had been missed. On the night of the 7th of May the elder prisoner was found in the barn by a man named George Ward, and was being taken by him and Connibeer to their master's house, when the younger Western came to the rescue, attacked Connibeer with a bill-hook, and inflicted such wounds upon his head as, in the opinion of Dr. Edwards, would cause him to suffer for the remainder of his life. The Jury found the younger Western guilty of an attempt to murder, and acquitted his father. Sentence of death was recorded against Western, jun., and his father was ordered to be imprisoned for 12 months for the felony, of which he had acknowledged himself guilty. James was 5'6¼" tall, dark brown hair, dar eyes, fresh complexion, stout, burn left arm, mole left arm.
