TICKET OF LEAVE: Joseph Weston was granted a Licence for Parole on 5 June, 1855, as below: Reference: PCOM 3/31/3154 Description: Licence number 3154: Joseph Weston. Convicted of Theft aggravated by previous convictions at the High Court of Justiciary at Edinburgh, Scotland, 02 February 1852. Then aged 17 years and by trade a Painter. Sentence: 7 years' transportation. Licence granted: 5 June 1855, for early release from Portland prison. From the Caledonian Mercury, 5 March, p3: “Law Reports… Mary Reid or Whiteside, Joseph Weston, and Joseph Stoddart—all habit and repute, the men having tickets-of-leave—were indicted on a charge of stealing from the pocket or person of Thomas McEwan, labourer, on the 15th or 16th of December last, in a close in the Pleasance, a silver watch. All the prisoners pled not guilty, but after evidence had been led, the jury returned a verdict of guilty. Sentence of transportation for fifteen years was pronounced against Stoddart and Weston, and of four years’ penal servitude against Reid.” —0—

FOOTNOTE: NEWSPAPER reports of the trial: From the Edinburgh Evening Courant, 4 March, p3: “Mary Reid or Whiteside, Joseph Weston, and Joseph Stoddart, were found guilty, the two former unanimously, and the latter by a majority, of the theft of a silver watch from a labourer and were sentenced. Whiteside to four years’ penal servitude, and the male prisoners to fifteen years’ transportation.” —0—
