6 May, 1857: He was received at Chatham, a public works prison for male convicts, east of London at St Mary’s Island, in Kent (https://www.prisonhistory.org). On the record of “male transports” from Chatham per Nile to WA he was listed as #961, 36 and a widower with one child; all other details match those on his Millbank record (Western Australia, Australia, Convict Records, 1846-1930; Convict Department, Registers; Convicts Transported Per Nile (R32)). --00--

9 September, 1856: John White, alias John Barry and John Brickley, was admitted to Millbank prison at Westminster in London, and listed as prisoner #3542. By the 1850s, Millbank and Pentonville were places for all male convicts to serve “their probationary term [of 9 months], after which they would be transported or sent to a public works prison” (https://www.prisonhistory.org). He served 7 months 25 days in separate confinement. He was 36, a labourer, widower with one child, Roman Catholic and able to read and write imperfectly. Next of kin -- "son John Brickley 'supposed to be somewhere in Whitechapel, London'". A notation on this record reads: "thoroughly bad, full of deceit and mischief" and notes his previous conviction for burglary, in 1855, as John Barry, for which he received a sentence of 1 month (UK, Prison Commission Records, 1770-1951; Millbank Prison; Register of Prisoners to 1885). --0--

JAILS: 1856: He was held at Usk Gaol, situated close to the centre of the town, and built in 1842–44 to a Victorian "rotunda" design, similar to that of Pentonville in London (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usk). There he served 5 months 13 days in separate confinement. --0--
