Convict Notes

12 May, 1886: From the Inquirer and Commercial News, p3: "An inquest was held at Geraldton on Monday [10 May] touching the death of a man named Robert White, who had been found dead in the harbour on the previous Sunday. He was last seen alive on the preceding Saturday evening, when he was evidently in a state of intoxication. While under the influence of liquor the deceased had been frequently heard to threaten that he would drown himself, so that the jury had no hesitation in returning an open verdict of 'Found drowned.'" Note: From the Fremantle jail record, it seems "the previous Sunday" means Sunday week, i.e. 2 May, 1886. --0-- 15 May, 1886: From the Herald, p5: "An inquest was held at Geraldton on May 4th before Mr. W. Gale J. P. and a jury to enquire into the death of a man named Robert White, whose body had been found in the harbor on May 20th. The deceased had been last seen alive near the Freemasons Hotel, and had when in drink been heard to say that he would drown himself. The jury returned a verdict of found drowned." Note: Clearly the dates in the second report don't stack up.
