National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/6/43 1822 Oct Prisoner name: William Storrier and John Millar. Prisoner details: Both aged about 19 years, from Dundee. Storrier is a flesher, Millar the son of John Millar Senior, a farmer. Court and date of trial: Circuit Court of Justiciary, Perth, September 1822. Crime: Rape or attempted rape - of Margaret Millar (servant to Mr Baxter) at the spinning mill at Glammiss, Angus. Initial sentence: Both to be whipped through the town of Dundee and then transported for 14 years. Annotated: 'Let the law take its course in these cases'. Petitioner(s): William Storrier (the convict) undersigned by 13 inhabitants of [Dundee] including the Provost and Chief Magistrate. John Millar (the convict) undersigned by William Maule MP and six other inhabitants of Dundee. Grounds for clemency: The disgrace that a public whipping would bring to the convicts' families. Other papers: Letter from James Small (Attorney for the convicts) transmitting the petitions and emphasizing that remission is only sought for the whipping.
2nd OFFENCE: William Storier was again convicted, at Berrima, New South Wales on 07/09/1844 for stealing a cow. 10yr sentence, commuted to 7yrs. 1844 details: Butcher; Protestant; literate; 5'4 1/2"; aged 44yrs; dark complexion; dark brown hair; Hazel eyes; married. 2yrs Probation. Port Arthur Penal Settlement. Ticket of Leave 11/07/1848 1848 & 1849 - at Longford, Tasmania. Conditional Pardon 08/04/1851
