Convict Notes

12 March, 1857: He was admitted to Portland prison in Grove Road, Dorset. Opened in November 1848 as the first male convict public works prison, it received prisoners who had already undergone periods of separate confinement at Millbank, Pentonville and specially contracted local prisons (https://www.prisonhistory.org/prison/portland-prison/). He was listed as prisoner #6784, 39 years old, married, able to read and write a little, Presbyterian and a labourer latterly a soldier. He had been found guilty of drunkenness, and one charge each of striking two sergeants (three charges in total). There is minimal information about his next of kin. This section merely states: Wilson, Edinburgh (UK, Prison Commission Records, 1770-1951; Portland Prison; Prison Records; to 1875). 10 September, 1857: He was sent from Portland to board the Nile for WA. --00--

BEFORE TRANSPORTATION: 9 January, 1856: Robert Wilson was held at Stirling Castle for 17 days pending his court martial. He was then transferred to Edinburgh Castle. 28 January, 1856: At his court martial at Edinburgh Castle, he was found guilty of "drunkenness and striking 2 sergeants". Sentenced to transportation for 14 years, he was held for just 3 days in all at Edinburgh Castle before being returned to Stirling Castle, probably on 29 January, for the next 2 months. At both jails, his behaviour was described as "good" (UK, Prison Commission Records, 1770-1951; Portland Prison; Prison Records; to 1875). 2 April, 1856: He was admitted to Millbank prison at Westminster, in London, which served as a holding facility for convicted prisoners before they were transported to Australia. There he spent 11 months 10 days in separate confinement and his behaviour was "good". Up until this time, his jail stints had been in association with other prisoners. --0--
